The device (1) has a closable container (2) for partially receiving the sports device. A gas sensor (18) e.g. semiconductor sensor, detects the concentration of substance, leaking from the sports device. The gas sensor outputs a signal depending on the detected concentration, where the output devices (13, 14) produce a signal dependent output signal. The sensor is sensitive to organic substances. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting a volatile material contained in a sports device e.g. table tennis bat.
