The method involves determining a movement trajectory on the basis of comparison of measuring signals received at a position (2) with respect to an initial position, at which a volume area of a workpiece (1) is detected, where the position (2) represents another volume area. The movement trajectory is determined by shifting a measuring sensor (4) along a workpiece surface (3) in the position (2). The volume areas partially overlap, and a position relative to the initial position is determined on the upper surface of the work piece based on the movement trajectory.
