The device for warning the driver of a motor vehicle against hazards in the dark has a switch unit (3) which is controllable by at least one sensor (1,2) in such a way that upon identifying hazards at least one long-range lamp is temporarily switched on. The duration of the long-range lamp being switched on is less than a second. The long-range lamp is formed by an as known per se main beam headlight (5). An independent claim is included for a method for warning the driver of a motor vehicle against hazards in the dark.
