The method involves calculating an output value representative of a current delivered by an alternator from two input values representative of an excitation current and speed of rotation of the alternator, respectively. One of the input values is measured at the level of a regulation unit that regulates a voltage delivered by the alternator, where the speed or rotation is measured by a Hall Effect sensor. INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for an alternator comprising a unit for regulating a voltage delivered by an alternator.
