The method involves calculating an output value by calculating two terms, proportional to corresponding input values, of an equation and by subtracting the terms from each other. The output value represents a current delivered by an alternator of a motor vehicle. One of the input values represents an excitation current of the alternator and the other input value represents a speed of rotation of the alternator. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle alternator comprising a unit for controlling voltage delivered by the alternator, comprising a device for estimation of current delivered by the alternator.
