An exhaust gas recycling circuit has a valve (4) to control the flow of recycled exhaust gas to an engine intake (3). The circuit has a bypass (7) for directing the exhaust gases towards an exhaust manifold (6) of the engine, where the bypass has a valve (8) to control the exhaust gas returning to the manifold, and the valves (4, 8) are controlled by a controller (5).
