Determining a pathogenic contamination, particularly bacterial contamination in a biological fluid containing blood platelets, comprises introducing biological fluid into a preservative pouch (2); taking two samples of the biological fluid; separating the contents from the pouch and the two samples; and determining the bacterial contamination in the first sample at an initial moment. Determining a pathogenic contamination, particularly bacterial contamination in a biological fluid containing blood platelets, comprises: introducing biological fluid into a preservative pouch (2); taking two samples of the biological fluid; and separating the contents from the pouch and the two samples; determining the bacterial contamination in the first sample at an initial moment. If the first sample is negative for contamination the process further comprises: storing the pouch containing the biological fluid under first conditions of storage; storing the second sample under second conditions of storage; determining the bacterial contamination in the second sample before using the biological fluid; and using the biological fluid if the second sample exhibits negative bacterial contamination.
