The device has lighting units (3) to illuminate a surface of a steel strip (B), and mirrors. An optical axis of a linear CCD camera (2) and light rays contained in an opening angle of the camera are directed towards a mirror (43) under an angle of incidence different from 90 degrees. The former mirrors have reflecting surfaces oriented in an opposite manner such that the rays are subjected to a series of reflections between the former mirrors to form an image of an aiming line (V`-V), with the surface, transversal with respect to a running direction (F) of the strip. An independent claim is also included for an image formation method in a product surface inspection device.
