The method involves equipping an illuminator device and a camera respectively presenting projection and optical axes parallel to a trajectory of a motor vehicle, in the vehicle. A reference image with a priorly determined light distribution is stored in the vehicle and is projected on a scene (100) located in the trajectory by the device. The scene with the projected image is visualized by the camera, and the visualization is stored. The stored reference and visualized images are compared to determine non-deformed zones, of the reference image, assimilated to frontal obstacles to be detected. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle implementing an obstacle detecting method.
