The garnishing of a pastry product on tart base (4) with elongated or crescent shaped fruit slices (2) such as apple, pear or apricot, comprises placing the fruit slices without contact with each other on a flat support (1), displacing a video recognizer (6) for positioning each slice on the support, picking up the slices by a robot (8) using information originating from the video recognizer to form a slice batch, and ensuring automatic placing of the slices on the tart base. The garnishing of a pastry product on tart base (4) with elongated or crescent shaped fruit slices (2) such as apple, pear or apricot, comprises placing the fruit slices without contact with each other on a flat support (1), displacing a video recognizer (6) for positioning each slice on the support, picking up the slices by a robot (8) using information originating from the video recognizer to form a slice batch, ensuring automatic placing of the slices on the tart base, determining one or more points and/or lines of reference on a surface of the fruit slices of any shape and size, detecting a position of the points and/or lines of reference on each of the slices by the video device, ensuring a gripping of the slices placed on the tart base according to the reference points and/or lines and to a predefined pattern, detecting general outline of each slices on the flat support by video device, comparing the detected outline with prerecorded parameters to eliminate undesirable slices, automatically calculating the surface of the detected outline of the slices, and automatically determining the weight of each slices from the surfaces. The picking and placing of the fruit slices are carried out slice by slice. Placing each slice on the tart base correctly by a spatial orientation video device to obtain a desirable pattern. A thickness and a density of the prerecorded parameters are taken as constant. The number of slices of each batch is adapted according to unit weight of each slice so that the weight of the slice batch is equal to a target value. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for a device for garnishing a pastry product on tart base.
