The system comprises a combustion engine 1 (e.g. ICE) and an electric motor/generator 10 each mechanically connected to a transmission 35 with a drive shaft 23, e.g. for wheels or a propeller 24. The motor/generator 10 is linked with an accumulator 6 for supplying energy to the latter under regeneration or receiving energy from the latter for aiding the combustion engine, the energy transfer being controlled by apparatus 25. The control apparatus 25 also controls combustion engine speed. The energy transfer to the accumulator is controlled so that the combustion engine 1 is substantially fully loaded for optimised fuel consumption. The energy transfer profile is a pulse charging profile.
