PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel catalyst precursor for preparation of a catalyst that controls the metal particle sizes and controls the distribution of group VIII metals and cations relating thereto from IIA, IIIA, IIIB, IVB, and IVA columns of the periodic table and a method for preparing such catalyst.;SOLUTION: The present invention relates to the method comprises a step of preparing a colloid solution A with a fixed pH containing cation MZ+ oxy(hydroxide) particles selected from the group consisting of cations from IIA, IIIA, IIIB, IVB, and IVA columns of the periodic table or using a commercially available similar colloid aqueous solution (solution A) and a step of adding the colloid solution A to an aqueous solution B containing a precursor salt of a VIII metal with a concentration between 0.001 and 1 mol/L, wherein the metal precursor salt is soluble under the pH condition employed in step 1.
