PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: surface-modified zirconium oxide particles which simultaneously maintain high durability and high transparency of zirconium oxide particles and have improved optical characteristics such as a refractive index and mechanical characteristics such as hardness; a dispersion of the surface-modified zirconium oxide particles; a transparent composite, an optical member, a composition for sealing a light-emitting element, and the light-emitting element.;SOLUTION: The surface-modified zirconium oxide particles are such zirconium oxide particles that the surface of each particle is modified by an organic silicon compound.
