PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the near field optical memory head which can increase the light intensity and projection efficiency of generated near field light and reduce the generated heating value. ;SOLUTION: The near field optical memory head is equipped with a silicon substrate 2 which has a tapered hole 2a in an inverted conical shape gradually reduced in diameter from the top surface to the reverse surface so that the vertex of the tapered hole 2a is a fine opening 2b and an optical fiber 4 which propagates laser beam La and is tapered and fitted in the tapered hole 2a so that its tip part 4c conforms with the shape of the tapered hole 2a. The laser beam La is propagated in the core 4a of the optical fiber 4 and projected to the fine opening 2b from the end surface of the core 4a positioned nearby the fine opening 2b, and near field light P is generated nearby the fine opening 2b.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
