PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rosin-modified phenol resin, in which a volatile organic solvent is not used or the amount of the solvent used is reduced, consequently, excellent in protection of the environment and printability and to provide gel varnish, printing ink and printing method each using the resin and to provide a method for producing the rosin-modified phenol resin.;SOLUTION: The rosin-modified phenol resin having 3,000-400,000 weight-average molecular weight is obtained by reacting a monoester substance, obtained by partially esterifying a rosin and an animal or vegetable oil fatty acid with a mono-alcohol, with a polyhydric alcohol and phenol formaldehyde initial condensation product. The method for producing the rosin-modified phenol resin is also provided. The gel varnish comprises the resin, an animal or vegetable oil component and a gelling agent.
