The present invention provides a method used in a communication device (202) for determining selection of alphabetic character entries. The method includes identifying (504) a first key of a keypad that is activated. Further, the method includes determining (506) a first value ri, related to a duration of the activation of the first key. Furthermore, the method includes determining (508) a selection of a first consonant of an alphabet from the identification of the first key and the first value ri. Moreover, the method includes sensing (510) a first activation of a vowel mode key of the keypad after the activation of the first key. The method also includes identifying (512) a second key of the keypad that is activated. Further, the method includes determining (514) a modification of the first consonant by a first vowel of the alphabet.
