The method involves successively inputting characters (Z) by an input device i.e. touch sensitive display (1), and comparing the inputted characters as a current character string with entries of a database (4). A character set (m) is determined, where the set follows as a next character of the current character string. The current character string is directed to the entries of the database. Another set of characters are input during the determination of the character set, and then buffered. An independent claim is also included for a navigation system for a vehicle comprising a device for selecting an entry of a database.
