Disclosed is an isolated regulatory element from a ryegrass (Lolium) species and capable of causing expression of an exogenous gene in plant cells, wherein said regulatory element is isolated from a nucleic acid of nucleic acid fragment encoding a 4 coumarate CoA-ligase (4CL) protein. Also disclosed are vectors comprising said regulatory element and methods for using it.
