A substantially purified or isolated nucleic acid encoding a cinnamoyl-CoA reductase (CCR) protein and its polypeptide from a ryegrass (Lolium) species are described. Vectors and plant cells comprising the nucleic acid are described. The nucleic acid can be introduced into a plant to modify lignin biosynthesis in a plant, or can be used as a molecular marker. Also described is regulatory element from a nucleic acid encoding CCR, which preferably includes the CCR promoter.
