A method for defining the species origin of the bone fragment of the small animals by infrared spectroscopy comprises the ashing of the bone fragments, their trituration and compacting followed by measuring the infrared absorbance in the ranges 530-630 cm, 1000-1200 cmand 3400-3500 cm. Then relative optical densities at 569 cm, 602 cm, 1047 cm, 1090 cmand 3435 cmare measured. The values are substituted into the system of discriminant equations. Upon paired comparison, the expert conclusion is made on the species origin of the bone fragment.
