The system comprises a high temperature (HT) cooling circuit for the engine and a low temperature (LT) cooling circuit for a water-cooled charge air cooler (WCCAC), the two circuits being connected to each other upstream and downstream from a coolant pump in the HT circuit. The LT circuit is also provided with a pump and includes a LT heat exchanger bypass pipe controlled via a multi-way valve. This valve allows a heating phase to be performed, in which coolant from the HT circuit is used for heating the charge air during extremely cold ambient conditions, and also allows a cooling phase to be carried out, in which the charge air is cooled in a traditional manner.
