A method for diagnosing acquired resistance or sensitivity to multiple drugs, related to the presence of a molecular variant of the MDR-1 gene, which comprises determining in a sample from a subject, the presence of a polynucleotide selected from the group consisting of : (a) a polynucleotide having the nucleic acid sequence of SEQ ID NO 122, (b) a polynucleotide encoding a Multiple Drug Resistance polypeptide (MDR-1), molecular variant, wherein said polynucleotide has a nucleotide exchange at a position corresponding to position 176 of the MDR-1 gene (Catalog No: M29445 or J05168); (c) a polynucleotide encoding an MDR-1 polypeptide, molecular variant, wherein said polypeptide has a T in a position corresponding to position 176 of the MDR-1 gene (Catalog No: M29445 or J05168) T; and (d) a nucleic acid molecule complementary to the polynucleotide from (a) to (c); wherein the presence of said polynucleotide is considered indicative of said resistance or said acquired sensitivity to multiple drugs, in said method.
