Infections due to environmental mycobacteria are increasing in both industrial and developing countries. Mycobacterium-mfQctQd pork can pass for human consumption due to the poor specificity of visual meat control at slaughterhouses. M. avium strainsin Finland evidence close genetic relatedness between human and porcine isolates. Earlier almost identical IS1245 fingerprints for M. avium strains from porcine and human origins (1) have been obtained. Although there is little evidence of direct transmission from animals to humans, certain strain types can be recovered from both, which is consistent with the possibility of pigs as a reservoir of virulent M. avium strains for humans or vice versa. Culture-independent effective methods are needed for the detection, quantification, identification, genetic profiling and epidemiological studies of environmental mycobacteria in order to trace the environmental reservoirs of human and animal mycobacteriosis.
