The present invention relates to a method of treating pain in a subject havingan NMDA receptor which includes administeringd-methadone, d-methadol, d-alpha-acetylmethadol, l-alpha-acetylmethadol, d-alpha-normethadol, l-alpha-normethadol, pharmaceuticallyacceptable salts thereof, or mixtures thereof, to the subject under conditionseffective for the substance to bind to the NMDA receptor ofthe subject. The present invention further relates to a method of treatingtolerance and physical dependence in a subject and a method ofbinding to an NMDA receptor.
