The invention relates to a composition which is intended for the treatment of industrial and urban solid and semi-solid (sludge) waste containing biodegradable organic material and which is applied to said waste. The invention is characterised in that the composition comprises a mixture of dehydrated, chemically-untreated particles of red algae (division Rhodophyta) and dehydrated, chemically-untreated particles of brown algae (division Phaeophyta) and to the use thereof in the treatment of said waste.
