This study investigated the combined treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) with two different lignocellulosic materials, namely green waste (GW) and dried olive pomace (DOP), in laboratory-scale landfill-bioreactors, under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. Similar variations were observed for the three bioreactors, for the majority of the investigated parameters. The aerobic treatment resulted in higher biodegradation rates and decreased leachate strength. Among the three bioreactors, the one containing a mixture of OFMSW and DOP, produced leachate with higher TN and TP concentrations, under anaerobic conditions. Moreover, an extended lag phase in CH4 and CO2 production was observed for this specific bioreactor. This is indicative of the recalcitrance of DOP to biodegradation and therefore suggests that better results might be obtained after applying a pretreatment procedure, prior to mixing with OFMSW.
