Method for non-destructive quality control of mechanically hardened surfaces of austenitic steel tubes by means of shot peening, in which characteristics that identify the degree of hardening are determined and compared with the characteristics of a reference tube. To achieve this, an eddy-current test is used in the quality control process and the eddy-current signals of the ferromagnetic martensite that is produced during the hardening is evaluated as the identifying characteristic of said hardening.
