A catalyst for the decomposition of formic acid, comprising a polynuclear metal complex represented by the formula (1), a tautomer or stereoisomer thereof, or a salt of the complex, the tautomer or the stereoisomer. Wherein M1 and M2 independently represent a transition metal and may be the same as or different from each other; Ar represents a ligand having an aromatic property which may have a substituent, provided that, when the ligand has a substituent, one or more substituents may be present; R1 to R27 independently represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or the like, or R15 and R16 may together form a group: -CH=CH- wherein H's may be independently substituted by an alkyl group or the like, and R23 and R24 may together form a group: -CH=CH- wherein H's may be independently substituted by an alkyl group or the like; L represents an arbitrary ligand or may be absent; and m represents a positive integer, 0 or a negative integer.
