APPARATUS AND METHOD OF RECOGNIZING BILL TYPE AND DISCRIMINATING COUNTERFEIT BILL FOR ONE CONTACT IMAGE SENSOR

Provided are an apparatus and a method of recognizing a bill type and discriminating a counterfeit bill using one image sensor. The apparatus includes a first light source and a second light source arranged over each side of a target bill for exposing each side of the target bill to different type of light; an image sensor for receiving a light reflected from and a light transmitted through the target bill; an image extractor for extracting an integrated image of the target bill by using the transmitted light and the reflected light; an image dividing unit for dividing the extracted image into a transmission image and a reflection image; and a discriminating unit for comparing the transmission image and the reflection image with reference data. The apparatus according to the present invention uses only one image sensor, thereby simplifying the con¬ figuration and allowing easy manufacturing. Also, the apparatus rapidly and accurately recognizes the bill type and counterfeit bills because a transmission image and a reflection image of the target bill are rapidly extracted and both images are compared with reference data.
