A method for determining a frame size of an RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) reader with a throughput adaptive frame aloha mode and the RFID reader thereof are provided to optimize performance based on system efficiency with a simply implemented structure, and improve a response time and the system efficiency of an RFID tag by adjusting the number of RFID tags responding to a request of the RFID reader according to the maximum frame size. A system efficiency calculator(410) calculates system efficiency of a current read cycle according to a result reading a plurality of RFID tags. A system efficiency comparator(420) compares the system efficiency of more than one previous read cycle with the system efficiency of the current read cycle. A frame size determiner(430) determines a frame size to be used to the next read cycle according to a comparison result. The frame size determiner increases the frame size to be used for the next read cycle if the system efficiency of the current read cycle is bigger than the system efficiency of the previous read cycle when the frame size of the current read cycle increases to the frame size of the previous read cycle.
