A method for forming catalyst particles with uniform and controlled density and size in a simple manner as compared with conventional methods is provided, and a method for forming nickel nanoparticles with uniform size and density on a substrate of metal or glass using an electroless nickel plating solution is provided. A preparation method of a metal nanoparticle catalyst for forming carbon nanotubes comprises the steps of: (i) cleaning a substrate or a substrate having a film formed thereon and heating the cleaned substrate to a temperature of 55 to 95 deg.C; (ii) spraying an electroless plating solution onto the heated substrate; (iii) spraying a catalyst onto the electroless plating solution-sprayed substrate; and (iv) cleaning and drying the catalyst-sprayed substrate. A preparation method of a metal nanoparticle catalyst for forming carbon nanotubes comprises the steps of: (i) cleaning a substrate or a substrate having a film formed thereon; (ii) spraying an electroless plating solution heated to a temperature of 55 to 95 deg.C onto the cleaned substrate; (iii) spraying a catalyst onto the electroless plating solution-sprayed substrate; and (iv) cleaning and drying the catalyst-sprayed substrate. Further, the electroless plating solution is selected from Ni, Fe, Co and an alloy thereof.
