A lithium transition metal composite oxide, a method for preparing the oxide, a cathode active material containing the oxide, and a lithium ion secondary battery containing the cathode active material are provided to improve battery performance and to suppress the fixation of a sintering powder to a sintering container. A lithium transition metal composite oxide contains 100-1,000 ppm of Si; and 300-900 ppm of F. The lithium transition metal composite oxide is prepared by mixing a lithium compound, a transition metal compound, a fluorine compound and a silicon compound; and sintering the obtained mixture. Preferably the fluorine compound is at least one selected from LiF, CaF2, MgF2, CoF2 and AlF3; and the silicon compound is SiOx or MySiOz, wherein 1=x=2; M is at least one selected from Li, H, Co, Ni, Mn, Mg and Al; 0y=4; and 2z=4.
