A method of fault detection and diagnosis based on rules with detailed classification in an air handling system is provided to detect single fault for a predetermined component part in a short time for instant repair of the part, thereby minimizing the maintenance cost for a building and taking effective countermeasures for aged facilities. A method of fault detection and diagnosis based on rules with detailed classification in an air handling system includes the steps of assigning a predetermined coefficient as a threshold value required for fault diagnosis and collecting data values measured from component parts of the air handling system, and determining whether an outdoor air temperature factor is abnormal among the data values. If the outdoor air temperature is in a predetermined range, a mode corresponding to range is automatically selected. In the selected mode, a pre-assigned threshold value is read out to determine fault of a plurality of temperature factors according to a plurality of fault determining formulas assigned to the corresponding mode and to determine data on positive or negative direction of signals of the abnormal component part. If thermodynamic determination formulas for respective system parts are satisfied and the fault determination formulas including two or more of the temperature factors relating to each other are satisfied simultaneously, the temperature factors commonly included in the fault determination formulas are determined as fault factors.
