This paper introduces a novel approach to fault detectionrnand diagnosis (FDD) of building controlrnstrategies for air-handling systems using a mathematicalrnmodel that links linear algebra analysis andrnpsychrometric analysis. The analysis of the psychrometricrnprocesses associated with each HVACrnsystem component, which are obtainable from simulationrnusing the program TRNSYS, leads to an assessmentrnof the thermodynamic efficiency of the airhandlingrnunit process governed by the control sequencernunder investigation. The proposed methodrnallows for the elimination of potential faults of therncontrol strategies in the design phase as well as forrnthe evaluation of control strategies in existing buildingsrnin order to make system operation more energyrnefficient, more economical, and more reliable.
