The battery has electrodes (2) perpendicularly arranged within a housing (1). A liquid electrolyte (3) e.g. acid, is filled in the housing. A plate-shaped overheating protection system (4) with an edge (4a) is arranged between a housing base and a lower edge of the electrodes, where height of the edge of the system is smaller than the height of the electrodes. A base-sided electrolyte layer is heated through heat conduction after switching-on a heating plate (7), where the edge of the protection system has holes and the acid is cooled down through a convection flow of the acid.
