The communication terminal e.g. mobile telephone, has a message production device arranged to produce an information requirement message. The information requirement message specifies information about another communication terminal, where the information represents capability characteristics of units of a physical layer or a data protection layer of that communication terminal and is conveyed to the communication terminal and a transmission device. The transmission device is arranged to transmit the information requirement message. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for requesting communication terminal information representing characteristics of a communication terminal (2) a method for providing communication terminal information representing characteristics of a communication terminal.
