The method involves detecting delay of a signal by a sensor, which is designed as an ultrasonic sensor. A distance to an object is detected, and a warning signal is generated based on the determined distance. The detected signal is assigned to predefined ranges (1-7). The warning signal is triggered dependent on the predetermined assignment to the individual ranges and/or a compliance value of the individual ranges. The warning signal is triggered based on a logical combination, which is based on Boolean operators.
