The method involves compressing the air supplied to an internal combustion engine (1), by utilizing a compressor (55). A rotational speed of the compressor is sensed using a sensor unit (200). A signal from the unit is utilized to determine variations of the signal, connected to pressure pulsations of exhaust gas, and existence of a fault is detected when the signal exceeds a predefined signal range during the triggering of the engine. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an internal combustion engine having a compressor to compress air supplied to the engine.
