The engine has cylinders, where an inlet valve for combustion air and an outlet valve for exhaust gas are attached to each cylinder. A valve cone (10) of the outlet and the inlet valves is coated areawise with a thermal damping material (13) and a thermal-insulating material. Sections of the valve cone are coated with the damping material. The valve cone is not coated with the material in an area (15), which acts with a valve seat of the respective cylinder. A warm-damping coating is applied by plasma spraying on the corresponding area of the valve cone.
