The device has guides (6) for a protection cover, and a drive (10) for moving the cover, where the guides are arranged at a rotating frame (4) of a roll changer (1) for pivoting the guides using a roll carrier (2). The guides are arranged at an external side of the frame parallel to a plane of an arm of the carrier, and the cover is a rolling grill or a net, where the cover is movable in the frame. A control unit controls the drive, and automatically opens and closes the cover depending on a determined speed of a material roll (3), which is clamped in the changer.
