The method involves mounting the component (2) such that vibrations from the component are damped in a negligible manner. A natural vibration is applied in the component by an external excitation unit (3). A decay behavior of the natural vibration is received in the component by a vibration receiver (6), and the decay behavior of the natural vibration is evaluated by an evaluation unit (7). An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting natural vibration in a component.
