The gear has a cam shaft (1) supported rotatably in a housing of an internal-combustion engine. Cam supports (2, 3) are arranged in corresponding end positions for operating a charge-cycle valve controlled by the shaft. The supports axially move between the end positions on the shaft. The cam shaft is locked in the end positions defined by contact surfaces (24, 25) by locking devices (27, 29). The locking device is arranged within the shaft and is influenced by an axial force of the supports.
