The method involves requiring a reagent unit for catalytic supported conversion of nitrous oxide of an internal combustion engine (10). Dosing of the reagent unit with a dosing signal is defined based on a downstream nitrous oxide actual value that is measured by a nitrous oxide sensor (18) in an exhaust gas treatment device (14) according to a catalyzer (16) in the exhaust gas treatment device. The dosing signal is influenced with a correction signal based on a measure for operating duration of the exhaust gas treatment device for a purpose of increasing the dosing of the reagent unit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for operating an exhaust gas treatment device that is arranged in an exhaust gas region of an internal combustion engine (2) a control device program for executing a method for operating an exhaust gas treatment device (3) a control device-program product with a program codes stored in a machine readable medium for executing a method for operating an exhaust gas treatment device.
