The head condenser unit for a distillation- or a rectification column (2), comprises a heat exchanger (5) and a gas ascent area (7), which guides to the heat exchanger, and a condensate container (10) that has a condensate discharge for the regular draining of the condensate from the condensate container. The condenser unit has a safety overflow channel (17) through which the condensate reaches an overflow level in the condensate container. The overflow level is led away from the condensate container in the gas ascent area. The head condenser unit for a distillation- or a rectification column (2), comprises a heat exchanger (5) and a gas ascent area (7), which guides to the heat exchanger, and a condensate container (10) that has a condensate discharge for the regular draining of the condensate from the condensate container. The condenser unit has a safety overflow channel (17) through which the condensate reaches an overflow level in the condensate container. The overflow level is led away from the condensate container in the gas ascent area. The condenser unit has a condensate entrance opening through which the condensate enters into the overflow channel. The overflow channel is formed in the direction of flow of the condensate, which is constantly increased. The overflow channel is formed by a half tube, which encompasses a part of a wall surrounding the gas ascent area over a part of its length. The overflow channel has a semicircular cross section. The overflow channel is formed as tubing, which rises upwardly with distance to the condensate container limiting below the container base and flows into an opening of a wall. The overflow channel flows into an opening, which limits the gas ascent area in a vertical wall section of wall. The overflow level lies below the heat exchanger. The overflow channel is formed in such a manner that the condensate discharges from the condensate container with a difference of pressure between gas ascent area and condensate container, before a pre-determined maximum level of the condensate is reached in the condensate container. Independent claims are included for: (1) a rectification- or a distillation column; and (2) a method for the operation of the condenser unit.
