The system has a main brake cylinder (1), a brake pipe attached to the brake cylinder and a pressure modulation valve (15) inserted into the brake pipe. A wheel brake (4) is downstream to the modulation valve, and a return pump conveys a pressurizing medium. A hydraulically operatable pressure control valve (2) is provided for connecting the wheel brake with a high pressure source or with a pressure-free storage tank (13) depending on a switching position of the modulation valve. The high pressure source has a high pressure reservoir (3) connected with a high-pressure pump (6).
