The system has an ignition coil dwell detection portion configured to output ignition coil dwell data (3100) related to charging of an ignition coil. An ionization detection portion is configured to output an ionization feedback signal that includes the ignition coil dwell data in a mode entered when possible pre-ignition conditions exist, and excludes the ignition coil dwell data in another mode entered periodically when possible pre-ignition conditions are absent. The ionization feedback signal is received by a powertrain control module (PCM) to perform ignition diagnosis. An independent claim is also included for a method for selecting data content of an ionization feedback signal.
