The system has an ionization detection circuit with an ionization detection portion, which is configured to detect an in-cylinder ionization signal. A knock processing portion present in a powertrain control module (PCM) (3400) processes the in-cylinder ionization signal to output a knock-amplified ionization signal. An additive portion connected to the ionization detection portion and the knock processing portion superimposes the knock-amplified ionization signal to the in-cylinder ionization signal to output a knock-enhanced ionization signal. An independent claim is also included for a method for processing an ionization signal.
