New diazonium polymerizable salts having redox and absorption properties useful to graft (semi)conducting substrate surface, which is useful in photovoltaic cell, particularly Gratzel photovoltaic cells
Diazonium polymerizable salts (I) having redox and absorption properties, are new. Diazonium polymerizable salts (I) of formula [X(x+)L nD dE m(N 2 +) pB 1] having redox and absorption properties, are new. X : transition metal, preferably Ru, Ir (both preferred), Os, Fe or Co; x : 1-5; L : ligand like pyridine, bipyridine, phenylpyridine (both preferred), terpyridine and/or phenanthroline; n : 1-5, preferably 2; D : 1-5 alkyl; d : 0-1; E : (poly)aromatic spacer carrying heteratoms, preferably bipyridine-phenyl; m : 0-5, preferably 1; p : whole number, preferably 1; and B 1counter ion, PF 6. Independent claims are included for: (1) the preparation of (I); (2) a process of forming a monolayer polymer having redox and absorption properties under visible region on a (semi)conducting surface comprising electrochemically grafting (I) and polymerization (I) to obtain a polymer film; and (3) a substrate comprising the polymeric monolayer.
