The method involves determining an actual starting instant of the combustion of a cylinder by measuring a rotation angle of a crankshaft and pressure of the cylinder during an engine cycle, where the cylinder is connected to the crankshaft by a connecting rod and a piston. The actual starting instant is compared with a set point combustion starting instant. The actual starting instant is shifted towards the set point instant when the actual instant and the set point instant are different. An independent claim is also included for an engine control for receiving signals indicating pressure of a cylinder and a rotation angle of a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine, respectively.
