A car engine with a post-treatment system (3) for exhaust gas,incorporates an ammonia generator to initiate the system (3),comprising heater(s) and a reservoir containing a metal ammine complex salt which decomposes on heating to form first ammonia and then hydrogen and nitrogen. An engine group (1) for a motor vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine (4) connected to an inlet circuit and an exhaust circuit with a post-treatment system (3) and an exhaust pipe (19),in which there is an ammonia generator (20) to initiate system (3) comprising heater(s) (19,24) and reservoir(s) (21) containing compound(s) of formula Ma(NH3)nXz (I),in which M : alkali or alkaline earth metal,transition metal or a combination such as K2Zn,CsCu or K2Fe; X : fluoride,chloride,bromide,iodide,nitrate,thiocyanate,sulfate,molybdate or phosphate; a,z : numbers of cations and anions respectively; z : 2-12 .Independent claims are also included for (1) a method (M1) for generating dihydrogen in (1) from an ammonia generator (20) as above,in which the reservoir (21) is heated by a heater (19,24) to decompose (I) into ammonia and then into dihydrogen and dinitrogen,and the resulting H2 is injected into the inlet circuit by an injector (22) (2) a method (M2) for generating ammonia in (1),as described for M1 .
